There are many people in Guernsey who are unable to achieve their full potential because they missed out on literacy skills in their youth, for a variety of reasons. The Guernsey Adult Literacy Project (GALP) was established four years ago to provide those adults with opportunities to develop their literacy skills.
Since its establishment, GALP staff have helped hundreds of learners to improve their skills.
GALP works in partnership with other organisations such as Action For Children, the Library service and Citizens Advice Bureau, all of whom have centres around the island where our teachers are able to meet their students. The project also works with the Home Department, providing further training in the Prison and with the Probation Service. GALP is also able to work with employers, providing literacy training and advice in the work place.
Over the years GALP has organised several events to help fund its activities. These include themed film nights, the Guernsey Variety Shows and, last year, a highly successful duck race.
This year our main fund-raiser is the Donkey Parade which we are hoping is going to be a fabulous community art project which will put smiles on lots of faces as well as raising funds for GALP.
